The New York Times article explains how consumers are manipulated by the design of Doritos. Specifically, the chips are created to be physically and psychologically appealing which increases consumption. Naturally, consumption of junk food is not good for a person’s health but people can be “encouraged” to eat enough to in some cases cause medical issues.
In the case of Doritos and other similarly-designed products, there are a number of theories of behavior than can used to explain consumer’s behaviour. Other theories can be used to described the behavior of junk food companies. Some of the theories overlap and some strongly contrast each other.
With May 2020 Prescribed Title #5, a TOK essay could / should examine RLEs where a single theory may be enough to understand a particular situation / phenomenon etc. The same essay should also look for RLEs where more than one theory is required.
