One of the “personal circumstances” in this RLE is the gender of Miho Otani, the first female captain of an Aegis destroyer in Japan. Militaries (or in this case the Japanese Marine Self Defense Force) are viewed as quite conservative and have a reputation for not always acted in a progress manner when recruiting and promoting women. The “Does it matter” phrase in May 2020 Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Essay Prescribed Title #3 could be investigated by taking an in-depth look at Otani’s rise through the ranks and how views on gender affected her.
